As Alicia stared at the wall of photos of our make believe family courtesy of my advertising department, my stomach sank. There seemed to be no pleasing her. Everything I’d done so far just seemed to set her off more, and I didn’t know what I could do to make things better. Even if she was only pretending to be my wife, I didn’t want her to be pissed off at me the whole time. Mr. Nishimura would be able to sense something was off, and it would all be for nothing.

It wasn’t just about the meeting, though. I didn’t like Alicia being annoyed with me on a base level. There was something about her that made me want to make her smile, and I’d completely failed to do that so far.

I wasn’t sure I’d be able to at all at this rate.

From upstairs, I heard Nick let out a victory cry, probably pulling off some great feat in one of the video games I got for him.

At least someone appreciated all my hard work.

It wasn’t easy to find the talented individuals to pull all this off on such short notice. Even if I didn’t do any of the actual heavy lifting, I had busted my ass to make sure everything got done in time for Mr. Nishimura’s arrival, and I had gone purposefully out of my way to make sure it all suited Alicia and Nick, but only the kid had actually shown any gratitude. His mother still seemed like she’d rather be anywhere else in the world.

“How long until he gets here?” she asked, moving through the house like an investigator, opening drawers, examining the contents of the cupboards, muttering to herself in what I assumed had to be Japanese, even though I didn’t speak a word of it.

“About five hours,” I told her. “If you want to take a nap or something, there’s plenty of time.”

She whipped around to look at me like I’d grown an extra head. “Nap? I’m just hoping there’s enough time to learn the layout of this house and where everything is so I don’t make it obvious that I don’t live here. The last thing we need is for him to ask for a pencil and I can’t tell him where to find one, so the whole thing falls apart.”

She had a point. One I hadn’t really considered.

“There are pencils and pens in my office,” I told her, hoping that helped.

“Great, so just another million things I need to mentally inventory,” she said, crouching down to look in the cabinet under the kitchen sink.

She sighed.

“I’m sorry, that was unnecessary. I know you’re trying to help, but this is kind of stressful. I don’t want to screw it up for you, and it’s been over a decade since I’ve really used my Japanese for any length of time, and--”

“Hey,” I said gently, lending a hand to help her up. “It’s going to be okay. If something goes wrong and this doesn’t work out, it’s not the end of the world.
